The 2009 World Series of Poker marks the 40th anniversary of the event. While many things in poker seem to be on the decline the WSOP has maintained it's cache and in about a week poker players will flock to their rented homes in search of the coveted bracelets. This will be the central page that we will use for our WSOP coverage, this page will have a red link within the schedule of events if we have either a recap or a final table video and/or episode. If you are viewing the videos in our replayer do not forget to use the "full screen" mode on the bottom right, it really adds a lot to the experience.

Unless you are a select few poker players winning a World Series of Poker bracelet will not mean very much for you. So from that perspective I think the luster is off of the shine of WSOP bracelets. Only five years ago poker players envisioned a world where winning a bracelet guaranteed you sponsorship money and a cushion of security from going broke. That world has not materialized, in part because there are too many bracelets to win.
There are only three open events that will be televised this year. The $40,000 event to commemorate the anniversary, the "Ante up for Africa" event and the main event will receive the bulk of the coverage. For most people that will mean the main event will be their only shot at poker stardom. Personally I do not have a problem with this, while some corners of poker have complained that it does not highlight other forms of poker the magic of Texas Holdem is it's simplicity. Besides when the masses of people watch poker on television they want the stories and ultimately they want to see someone get lucky to win millions of dollars.
There is a lot of speculation that the numbers overall will be down significantly over the past few years with the economy being the major reason. I think another significant reason is that the dream is gone for a lot of people; the people that remain are the lifers that represent our core of poker players. While the tournaments will likely be tougher to win this year because of that in reflection we should all be smiling at the lengths our game has come.
Jeffrey Pollack is the commissioner for the WSOP and he stands head and shoulders above anyone else making a significant impact on the future of poker. He has done a great job of straddling the line of player input combined with television interests.
My all time favorite Milwaukee's Best commercial was where the home game players in their garage would go to the fridge to ask Chris Ferguson's advice. The last few years have not been so creative. I think it also says something that the primary sponsor of the WSOP is something other than an alcohol company. With Godaddy sponsoring the NBC heads up event and now Jack Links what you are seeing is a shift in the acceptance of poker as a brand, which can only be good for the future of the game we all enjoy.
Cada is not "The Kid" Stu Ungar was and will alway be "The Kid". Cada doesn't compare to Stu as a poker player. I have a great deal of respect for both "kids" but Joe Cada should seriously respect Stu by not using his nickname.
that Phil Hellmuth hand with the added commentary is hilarious
"With Godaddy sponsoring the NBC heads up event and now Jack Links what you are seeing is a shift in the acceptance of poker as a brand, which can only be good for the future of the game we all enjoy." Couldn't have said it better myself, great article.

Mr.Bettman should be ashamed to have the worst poker player in the world as the WSOP champion. This disgusts me. Don't be surprised when you never here of him again EVER.
