Vanessa Rousso beats the odds at NBC Heads Up Championship

When the NBC Heads Up championship began I wrote an article about who should not have been included.  Vanessa Rousso was on that list.  Women historically have a tough time breaking through in poker, some say it is just a shear numbers thing others think it goes deeper.  Which does not necessarily explain the way people feel about Vanessa Rousso.  In virtually every interview I have ever seen of her she comes off great.  Certainly she has had some moments at the table, we all have but I think the big part is that the marketing of her brand includes her education and "game theory" expertise.  It is also well known that she went to Duke, I think that contributes a bit as well.  For the masses that play poker it's an old boys network and they would rather not have some uppity smart gal taking over.
Final match featuring Vanessa Rousso and Huck Seed
Huck Seed wins the 2009 NBC Heads Up Championship
On her way to 2nd place she knocked off Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu only to lose her last matchup to Huck Seed.  You might recall that Huck Seed has cashed every year in this event and is considered a favorite because his style just fits the format well. Still Vanessa's accomplishment should not be overlooked and the more accomplishments she can put on her poker resume will only help the way she is marketed and ultimately percieved by the average fan.  Which will be good for both her and poker because it is fairly clear she is a fresh face and it does not hurt that she is an attractive woman.
